Five Places Electricity Goes During a Nova Scotia Summer

Same house, warmer weather, and a power bill that refuses to cool off.

When the furnace finally goes quiet for the season, a lot of Nova Scotians expect the power bill to ease off with it. It does not always work out that way, because summer tends to move electricity around the house rather than switch it off. The heating load falls and cooling, humidity control, refrigeration and a busier household pick up the slack. 

Knowing where it goes helps you spot changes in your consumption, catch the waste you can actually avoid and make sensible choices about your energy. Here are five places it tends to go once the weather warms up.

1. Keeping your home comfortable

Heat pumps and air conditioners get busy as the temperature climbs, and depending on your home and the weather, cooling can turn into one of the biggest electricity uses of the season.

The lower you set the thermostat, the harder that equipment works to get there and hold it. Cooling rooms nobody is using burns power for no return, especially with a door or window left open to the outdoors.

Maintenance earns its keep here. A clogged filter chokes airflow and makes the whole system strain. Through a stretch of warm weather, it helps to set a heat pump firmly to cooling rather than letting it flip between heating and cooling as the indoor temperature drifts.

2. Removing moisture from the air

In a Nova Scotia summer, the thermometer only tells part of the story. Humidity can make a room feel warmer than it reads and leave things damp, basements especially.

A dehumidifier helps with both, though it can run for hours without drawing the attention an air conditioner would. Set it to chase an unnecessarily low humidity level and it will hum away almost non-stop.

Keep the windows and doors shut while it runs, otherwise it spends the day pulling moisture out of fresh outdoor air. Cleaning the filter and keeping the drainage clear help it work properly.

3. Keeping food and drinks cold

Fridges and freezers run all year, but summer leans on them harder. A warmer kitchen means more work to keep everything cold, every open door lets the cold spill out, and the extra groceries, drinks and food for guests change how the fridge gets used.

The second fridge or freezer is worth a hard look. Older units can draw far more power than newer ones, and that gets worse when they sit in a hot garage, shed or some other space you are not cooling.

Check the temperature settings, the door seals and the airflow around each one. If an old garage fridge is mostly keeping a six-pack company, it's fair to ask whether it needs to run all summer.

4. Heating water and doing more laundry

Hot water does not take the summer off. If anything, the season asks more of it.

Showers keep coming. Beach days, sports and time outdoors generate laundry, and visiting family and summer guests add showers, dishes and washing on top. A fair bit of summer's hidden electricity use starts outdoors and finishes in the laundry room or the shower.

Washing in cold water trims the energy a lot of loads need, and when the weather cooperates, hanging clothes to dry gives the dryer a rest.

5. Powering summer routines

Some summer loads swing widely from one house to the next. Pool pumps, hot tubs, fans, portable air conditioners, outdoor lighting, electric barbecues, power tools and yard equipment all add up in their own way.

EV charging can climb during road-trip season, and a weekend at the cottage brings its own set of appliances and gear. None of it applies to everyone, and that is the point. Changing routines either introduce new loads or keep familiar equipment running longer.

Check the timers and schedules, especially on anything that runs quietly or on its own. A pool pump, a fan or an outdoor light can stay on far longer than anyone meant it to.

Understanding your summer electricity use

If you want to know what is actually going on in your home, start with the kilowatt-hours rather than the dollar figure at the bottom of the bill. Divide your total use by the number of billing days to get an average daily figure, then hold it against the same stretch last year. Think about what changed. Was it hotter or stickier out? More people around? Did you add an appliance, host a crowd or spend more time on the road? Pay attention to the equipment that runs on its own for long stretches, the dehumidifiers, pumps, fridges and cooling systems. A bigger bill does not automatically mean the rate went up. It can just as easily reflect more consumption, a longer billing period or a shift in how the household runs.

Efficiency and renewable electricity handle two different parts of the same equation. Efficiency brings down how much electricity your home needs, and choosing renewable electricity changes the source that supplies it. The two work together rather than against each other, and using less where you can while choosing a cleaner source for the rest is a practical way to take part in the energy transition. Electricity keeps a Nova Scotia summer running, and knowing where it goes puts you in a better position to manage it.
